====== Ethnic roots ======

Vettuva Gounders are from agricultural family background like other Gounders. They are the lineage of the devotional legend and Siva Bhakta Kannapa Nayanaar. Historic evidences confirm that they lived in Khalahasthi and places around during Kannapa Nayanaar's days. Nowadays, most pockets of Vettuva Gounders live in Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Madurai, Karur, Trichy, Coimbatore and Thirunelveli districts. The Bhavanishakar constituency in Erode district has been represented by Vettuva Gounders for the past twenty five years.
===== Feudal past =====

In Tamil language the word Vettuvan or Vetan means hunter. The word is derived from the verb Vettu meaning to cut. Many hunter gatherer tribes across Tamilnadu and neighboring Kerala are still referred as Vetan or Vetar. Vettuva Pulayar is the name of a significant caste in Kerala. The word Vettuvan is etymologically related to Sinhalese Vedda and Telugu Bedda for primitive tribes.

Vettuva Gounders have a rich heritage of culture and civilization which made them to be treated as a respected class. They are usually called Ooru Gounders ( meaning head of village). Apparently the clan divisions between a settled group commonly known as Vellala Gounder and Vettuva Gounder show similarities . Both communities did an assimilation of hunting groups into settled agricultural groups. Vettuva Gounders are tolerant, compassionate and always exhibit brotherhood to all other communities.

===== Marriage =====

Gounders marriage Kalyanam is a multi-day function and happen on consecutive days. The marriage function starts with Muhurtha Kaal which marks the initiation of marriage. Muhurtha Kaal is performed in front of the house by installing a Neem stick tied with a yellow cloth filled with navadhanyas. On the day of Muhurtha Kaal pooja, bride/bridegroom family do fasting until the pooja is complete.

Nowadays, marriage starts with the modern custom of combining marriage and Nichiyadartham betrothal together. The bride is offered with cloths and gold from bridegroom family. Bridegrooms sisters will keep flower and tilak to the bride. During the Nichiyadartham, the bride and bridegrooms family history starting from Kalahasthi to their current generation is explained. This event is called Kulam Othudhal and is done by some elders of the respective families ( Pangalis). Later, they do the seer (series of rituals). Bride groom will be shaven by brides family barber (Barbers are experts in medicine and assessing ones health condition. He will ensure that bride groom is really fit). Next ritual for the bridegroom will be taking bath in front of brides male members for the reassurance of bridegrooms health by the relatives. Similarly Bride will also take bath in front of bridegrooms female members. Usually bridegrooms sister will help dress the bride.

On the marriage day, there are poojas performed on Nattukal in the early morning for both bride and bridegroom. This is followed by Muhurtham which marks the thalli tying. Bride will be taken to bridegrooms house and back to brides house. On the next auspicious day yennai theiypuu or oil bath is performed to bride and bridegroom to relieve the stress. Brides parents and Pangalis will visit their Sampanthis with sweets and Karam. This is called Kara Sampanthi Allaippu. This is an official meet. Nowadays, a non-veg meal is arranged to show their wealth and treat each other.

===== Clans or Kulam  =====

Vettuva Gounder community has sub groups called Kulam which number around three hundred and sixty. These Kulams are primarily for the purpose of marriage. It also provides root of their family tree and also provides thier activity within the community like some of them are warrior, some of them are business man  etc. There are people who rule the group called வேந்த வேட்டுவர்.

கொங்கு வீர பெருங்குடியினரான வேட்டுவரிடையே (கவுண்டர்) பல குளங்கள் (கூட்டப் பிரிவுகள்) ஏற்பட்டன. இவை எதனை என்பதை நாம் அறுதியிட்டு உறுதியாகக் கூற இயலாது. இருபினும், ஆயிரம் குலப் பிரிவுகள் இருந்ததாக அறியப்படுகிறது . எனவே தான் வேர் வகையை எண்ணினாலும் வேட்டுவர் வகையை என்ன முடியாது எனும் முதுமொழியும் ஏற்படுள்ளது. நடுகற்கள், கல்வெட்டுகள், செப்பெடுகள், ஓலைசுவடிகள், பஞ்சவர்ண ராஜகாவியம், இலக்கியம், சோழர் பூர்வ பட்டயம் ஆகியவை மூலம் அறியப்படுகின்ற சுமார் 363 குலங்களின் பெயர்கள் மட்டும் காண்போம். வேட்டுவர்கள் குலபிரிவுகள் அடிப்படையிலும் பல பகுதியாக பிரிந்து வாழ்தனர்.
சிலர் தாம் எந்த ஊரிலிருந்துகுடி பெயர்ந்தனரோ  அந்த மன்னனின் (ஊரின்) பெயரைத் தமது குலத்திற்கு (கூட்டம்) வைத்துக் கொண்டனர். பலர், கொடை வீரம், மாண்பு, விலங்குகள், பறவைகள், மரம், செடி, கோடி, சங்க கால தலைவர்கள், பெண்பாற் புலவர்கள் ஆகியவற்றியையும்  தமது குலபிரிவுகளாக கொண்டனர். இதன் காரணமாகவே, இக் கூட்டப் பெயர்கள் ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. கொங்கு வேட்டுவரிடையே குல பட்டியலை கீழே காண்போம்.
வரலாற்று செம்மல் பேராசிரியர் இராசசேகரத்தங்கமணி அவருடைய "கொங்கு சமுதாயம் வேட்டுவர்" என்னும் நூலின் மூலம் வேட்டுவர் சமுதாயக்  குலங்களை அதன் பெருமைகளுடன் தொகுத்து கூறும் இந்த "வேட்டுவர் கலிபெண்பா" கலூர் பரணன் அவைகள் மூலம் அறியப்பட்டது.
